Bassist Ken Forssi, a former member of the Surfaris, replaced Fleckenstein, who would go on to join the Standells. With the band increasingly unreliable, Elektra brought in several session men, including drummer Hal Blaine. The band took the move as a wake-up call, and the result was a unique creative outburst, marked by complex song structures, archly mannered singing and dark, obtuse lyrical material.
Holtzman, in his Elektra memoir, speculated that the singer wanted to be near his drug connections. Lee had already declined to perfom at the Monterey Pop Festival. Shortly after the release, Lee parted with his band mates, beginning a long cycle of rotating band members. In England, he cut lengthy jams with Hendrix, but the tapes were bogged down in legal disputes.
Meanwhile, past band mates were struggling. He died of a heart attack on Christmas Day A conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm resulted in a prison sentence; upon his release inhe toured accompanied by the Los Angeles group Baby Lemonade. The first two albums pretty much define mids psych rock. The author tries to unravel the varying contradictory claims — reproducing an essential improv part of their live set.

However, Love never got the success they deserved — and seemed to come so easily to groups like the Airplane and the Doors — mainly down to ineffective management and promotion. Lack of touring or high-profile big gigs meant they were soon overtaken by former support act the Doors. The real reason for not touring was a lot simpler — Lee and Echols knew from growing up in the Deep South that there was no way a racially mixed group would be tolerated in KKK country.
Musically the next album Forever Changes was a leap into the stratosphere, a collection of songs that crystallize mids LA. From then on albums like Four Sail and Out There saw more lineup changes and a solo album Vindicator, with contributions from Jimi Hendrix. Then came years of decline, drugs and imprisonment. Not so often. We should have had more songs. The live version is really cool, one of the first true fusion jams which allowed the musicians to stretch out, and take solos. Halfway through a four-album deal, the sales figures were depressing: Da Capo made No. Chances were blown. He claimed he was too ill to be interviewed.

Photographer Guy Webster took the back cover image for Da Capo. Love ended with three nights at the Fillmore, headlining over Moby Grape, showcasing all of Da Capo. But things were shifting. But Lee foresaw only bad things. Ken Forssi and Johnny Echols were heading towards heroin addiction. As Da Capo ebbed away, he began constructing his masterpiece, Forever Changeswhich would emerge more than a year later — a lifetime in the late 60s.
That album would fare even worse than Love and Da Capobut it would be garlanded belatedly as one of the great albums of the era. When he was diagnosed with the myeloid leukaemia that would eventually kill him ina group of celebrity fans, including Robert Plant, Ian Hunter and Ryan Adams, banded together for a tribute concert to raise money for his medical bills.
