A more successful biography than Michael Bentley's of Herbert Butterfield — partly because of its layout. Bentley put in three thematic chapters on God, religion and science on top of the chronological ones, and that confused me as a reader. Sisman deals with the themes inside the chronological order, and that makes this book more accessible.

Trevor-Roper was a great historian and a brilliant man outstanding in languages and maths too but he was not well-liked. Sisman explains all that and, touchingly, shows a rather likeable Trevor-Roper emerging in his last years. That final portrait of the modest historian accepting his own passing reminded me of someone Trevor-Roper clashed with, my historian grand-father Robert Dudley Edwards.
He too, Dudley, mellowed into greater understanding in his last years and I could not help wishing that they could have met each other again then, as they would have appreciated one another in the flesh, and said so. They were both Tudor specialists who could interpret today from the perspective of the past.

This book has been siting in my library for the last four years but I've only now gotten around to reading it. The latter work was largely completed bybut for unknown reasons was not finished. The third book was The Invention of Scotland: Myth and Historya critique written in the mids of what Trevor-Roper regarded as the myths of Scottish nationalism.
