Traditional dance cannot die — Segun Adefila 28th October A colleague in Trinidad who had studied in Nigeria connected us with some theatre professors there and they, in turn, pointed us to Segun. We then had a few Skype conversations with Segun and suddenly, out of the blue, at the end of October he turned up in Amsterdam to speak about children and art at a conference sponsored by DutchCulture.
Nelly, Anamaria and Eugene went to meet him and discovered an unassuming, gentle and very focused artist who has been working hard for the past 25 years to make a difference in the Bariga township of Lagos, Nigeria. Inhe responded to an add and joined a performance group. A year later he founded his own company with a few friends from the neighbourhood.
We have also had embarrassing moments. There was a time we had a good performance on stage. After we were done, we decided to go back to flex more muscles. The Master of Ceremonies did not want to offend us so he allowed us. We later messed up and people who were initially clapping for us later stoned us out of that stage laughs.

At times, I wear trainers and shirts. I just feel more comfortable with wearing traditional attire. What are some of the notable achievements of Crown Troupe? We have been around despite many odds. We would not have had this interview 25 years ago but we are having it now and that is because we have been around. What are the downsides of being a theatre practitioner?
We face many struggles all the time. Sometimes, I wish I could just stay in my house and people would come to watch my plays. When it comes to other professions like medicine and law, people go to meet them. But in our profession, it feels like we are going to meet people or they are doing us a favour. That can be a bit discouraging.
Will you encourage any of your children to become full-time theatre practitioners? Yes, I will. But, I will also advise them to learn something else. What are your hobbies? I love to travel to new places in company with friends. I like to be happy. Happiness is my hobby. All rights reserved. Advertise with us Monday, January 27, For Eze, going to school meant walking for miles and having to carry load to the market, which was the same distance as his school. I must say that it helped me become appreciative of the support I enjoyed, going to school at that age.
I went to go to school then being driven in a car by my father. The book shared the importance of having parents talk to their children to be confident of themselves and be the best at their studies. My memories of the book also remain strong following the lessons that Eze learned while he served his master. He learned the importance of timeliness and focus in everything he did.
He learned also, the reward for not taking what belonged to other people, just as his master taught him. I saw also in the book that life makes a beautiful meaning when you interact with people. It showed a relationship between the teachers and their pupils.
